As seen in the Carmel Pine Cone

From the Mayor’s Desk: My Philosophy for Governing

A Note of Gratitude and Purpose

It is an honor to serve as Carmel’s mayor and share my thoughts with you through this monthly column in the Carmel Pine Cone. My heartfelt thanks go to Paul Miller for providing this platform which I hope will play a vital role in fostering communication within our community.

Opening the Door to City Hall

Through this column, I aim to provide insights into how your city government operates, how we make decisions, and how you can contribute to shaping Carmel’s future. I plan on having public sessions to provide a clear understanding of some issues discussed here. Together, we can ensure that our city continues to thrive while preserving the qualities that make it so special.

Governing as a Team

As mayor, my role is not leading alone but collaborating as one of five dedicated council members along with city leadership, commissioners, and staff. Each team member brings unique skills, opinions, and a passion for their work. Together, we play an essential role in setting priorities, conducting thorough research, and making thoughtful decisions. A positive and productive team approach is vital for addressing the challenges and opportunities facing our community.

Engaging All of Carmel’s Voices

Carmel is a vibrant mosaic of perspectives—both retired and working residents, business and building owners, nonprofits organized for a purpose, sphere of influence folks, and visitors who come to visit this special place. Each voice matters. My commitment is to create opportunities for connection and participation. From focused council meetings, vibrant town halls, community surveys to emails and informal conversations, your input is essential. Transparency and open communication are the cornerstones of trust, and we are dedicated to keeping you informed and engaged. I invite you to take an active role in shaping Carmel’s future.

What’s Coming to the Council Agenda

In the near term, the council will have on upcoming agendas the police station project, security camera contract, and addressing updates to our Housing Element. Keeping abreast of the Harrison Library rehabilitation project are also on the horizon. These initiatives are critical investments in our community’s safety, accessibility, inclusivity, and quality of life. Ensuring that city facilities meet current and future needs will require careful planning and input from all stakeholders. We look forward to engaging with the community on these important efforts.

Keeping Carmel Safe and Walkable

From a practical standpoint, public safety is a central focus for the city. Repairing uneven sidewalks and unlevel tree wells is already a priority. These issues are not merely aesthetic; they are critical to the safety and accessibility of our streets. Our dedicated Public Works team is evaluating the most urgent needs and implementing improvements to maintain the charm and walkability of our town while protecting the health of our trees and landscaping.

Budget Season and Fiscal Responsibility

Overarching all our efforts is the city budget. In January, we will review our current financial state. I am excited to work alongside a council that will be fully engaged in the process.

Together with City Hall staff and input from the community, we will assess our progress and make any necessary adjustments. Our goal is to ensure a process that is transparent, efficiently invests our funds, and provides accountability.

In Closing: A Personal Commitment

Margaret and I are deeply grateful to call Carmel-by-the-Sea home and to play an active role in this exceptional community. Let’s work together to protect its positive spirit, address its challenges, and nurture its potential. Thank you for the trust you have placed in me and our new council. I look forward to serving you effectively alongside my fellow council members.
